Is it always the case that when a fetus has a significant amount of fluid at the back of its neck during pregnancy, it means that the baby has Down syndrome? I would like to understand if this is a definitive indicator or if there are other factors to consider.

No, excessive fluid at the back of a fetus's neck, also known as nuchal translucency, does not always indicate Down syndrome. While an increased nuchal translucency measurement can be associated with chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, it is not a definitive diagnostic tool. Other factors such as maternal age and additional prenatal screening tests, like non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) or amniocentesis, may be necessary for an accurate diagnosis. It is important to consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance based on your specific situation.

The only way to know for sure is to go for a scan that looks for anomalies the Dr should be able to tell you from your blood tests as well and the results of the scan if the baby is at risk of down syndrome
