I am currently 24 weeks pregnant and have been prescribed Flucol 650 by my gynecologist to treat strep throat and fever. I would like to know if it is safe for me to use this medication during pregnancy?

It is important to consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication during pregnancy. However, Flucol 650 is generally considered safe for use in pregnant women, especially when the benefits outweigh the potential risks. This medication belongs to the class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, which are generally not recommended during pregnancy due to their potential adverse effects on fetal development. However, Flucol 650 contains a lower dose of the active ingredient fluconazole, making it less likely to cause harm. Additionally, short-term use of this medication is unlikely to pose significant risks. Nevertheless, it is crucial that you discuss your specific situation with your gynecologist or obstetrician who can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current condition. They may also consider alternative treatment options or adjust the dosage if necessary.

When I came down with strep while pregnant I remember panicking about meds too. My OB said most over‑the‑counter cold/flu pills weren't tested on expectant moms, so I avoided combination tablets like Flucl 650. Instead I stuck to plain paracetamol for fever and pain, drank loads of warm lemon/honey water, and did salt water gargles for my sore throat. It cleared up with rest and antibiotics prescribed specifically for pregnancy. Every woman and situation is a bit different, so if something has been prescribed by your own doctor it's because they feel it's appropriate for you. If you have any doubts you can always ring your pharmacist or doctor again to put your mind at ease, but I'd personally steer clear of self‑medicating during pregnancy.
