What are the potential complications that can arise during pregnancy when a woman has intramural fibroids?

I have a couple of intramural fibroids myself and remember panicking when I first found out. My OB reassured me that the vast majority of women with fibroids carry to term without any major issues. Intramural just means it’s in the wall of the uterus, so it usually doesn’t interfere with the baby directly.

That said, there can be some annoyances: I had more cramping and spotting early on, and one friend’s fibroid grew with the pregnancy and caused some discomfort. In very rare cases they can affect the placenta’s position, make the baby lie breech, or increase the chance of a C‑section if they’re very large. But most of us just get regular scans so the doctor can keep an eye on growth and blood flow. Try to take it one appointment at a time and don’t Google too much – your care provider will tell you if there’s anything you need to watch for.
