I'm pretty much a plant‑lover myself and lived off fruit for the first trimester because it was all I could keep down! An apple a day isn't going to harm you – it's fibre, vitamins and a bit of natural sugar. Just give them a good wash to remove any wax or pesticides.


The bigger challenge with being vegan in pregnancy is making sure you get enough protein, iron, calcium and B12. Things like lentils, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, quinoa, nuts and seeds were staples for me. I also added fortified plant milks and cereals for B12 and calcium, and kept taking my prenatal vitamins. If you eat a wide variety of whole foods and pay attention to those nutrients you'll be fine.


There are a few foods everyone should be careful with in pregnancy – raw sprouts, unpasteurised juices or nut milks, and anything that might carry food poisoning like undercooked beans or rice. And since you're vegan you don't have to worry about the usual advice about sushi or deli meats! If you're unsure, a chat with a dietitian or midwife who understands vegan diets can give you tailored advice. But go ahead and enjoy your apples – I ate at least one a day with a handful of nuts for protein.
