asked Feb 19, 2021 in Pregnancy Period General by Jollie
I recently visited my doctor who told me that I am 4 weeks pregnant. However, when I used a pregnancy calculator, it showed that I am actually 6 weeks pregnant. This has left me confused and unsure about the accuracy of my pregnancy timeline. Can someone please help me understand what could be causing this discrepancy?

It is not uncommon for there to be a slight discrepancy between the estimated gestational age provided by your doctor and the one calculated by an online pregnancy calculator. The most accurate way to determine your due date is through an ultrasound examination performed in the first trimester. This will provide a more precise measurement of fetal development and help establish a more accurate timeline for your pregnancy. Keep in mind that every woman's menstrual cycle and ovulation patterns can vary, which can affect the calculation of gestational age. Additionally, some online calculators may use different algorithms or assumptions when estimating due dates compared to medical professionals. If you are concerned about the difference in weeks between your doctor's estimate and the online calculator, it is best to discuss this with your healthcare provider who can provide further clarification based on your individual circumstances.

Usually, you start counting on the first day of your last period, because most women aren't sure of the exact conception date so, for example, my last period started Dec 22, so I am considered 8 weeks pregnant. Obviously I wasn't pregnant on December 22, because I was bleeding, so the first 2-3 weeks in the count are not actually weeks that you were pregnant. Maybe your doctor counted a different way.

Because pregnancy calculator starts from 1st day of your last menstrual period. Even though you are not pregnant in 1st 2 weeks but your body does get prepare for pregnancy.
