I am currently 23 weeks pregnant and experiencing shortness of breath when lying on my sides. I also feel my heart beating strongly and have pain under my right breast/lung area when I breathe. Is there any way to alleviate these symptoms? This is my third pregnancy, and I need help.

Experiencing shortness of breath during pregnancy is quite common, especially as your baby grows and puts pressure on your diaphragm. However, it's essential to address any chest pain or discomfort you may be feeling. Here are some tips to help relieve your symptoms:

  • Adjust your sleeping position: Try propping yourself up with pillows while lying on your side to ease the pressure on your diaphragm and improve breathing.

  • Practice deep breathing exercises: Take slow, deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. This can help expand your lung capacity and reduce the feeling of breathlessness.

  • Maintain good posture: Sit or stand up straight to allow for optimal lung expansion and airflow.

  • Avoid triggers: Identify any triggers that worsen your symptoms, such as certain foods or activities, and try to avoid them.

  • Stay active but don't overexert yourself: Engage in regular low-impact exercises like walking or swimming to improve cardiovascular health without putting excessive strain on your body.

  • Talk to your healthcare provider: It's crucial to discuss these symptoms with your obstetrician or midwife so they can evaluate if there are any underlying issues causing the shortness of breath and chest pain.

Remember, every pregnancy is unique, so it's important not to ignore persistent or severe symptoms. Your healthcare provider will be able to provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
