I am currently in my 6th month of pregnancy and experiencing severe pain for up to half an hour after intercourse. Could this be a symptom of a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

It is possible that your severe pain after intercourse during pregnancy could be a symptom of a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs are common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and increased pressure on the bladder. Symptoms of UTIs include frequent urination, burning sensation while urinating, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and lower abdominal pain. It is important to consult with your healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment. They may recommend a urine test to confirm the presence of bacteria and prescribe antibiotics if necessary. Additionally, practicing good hygiene, drinking plenty of water, and emptying your bladder before and after intercourse can help prevent UTIs during pregnancy.

I remember having some pretty sharp pains after intimacy when I was pregnant with my second, and it scared me too. My midwife reassured me that your cervix and ligaments are extra sensitive from all the changes and sometimes you can get cramping if things were a bit vigorous. A urinary tract infection usually comes with burning when you pee or a constant urge to go, rather than pain just after sex. If you don't have those UTI symptoms, it's likely just your body reacting to the extra pressure and hormones. That said, gentle positions, lots of water and taking it slow made a big difference for me. If anything feels off for more than a day or two, it's always worth calling your care provider just to be safe.
