Is it safe for babies to sleep on their stomachs?

Is it safe for parents to let their baby sleep on their stomachs, or should they always be placed on their backs? I've heard conflicting information and want to make sure I'm doing what's best for my baby's safety.

I did not put my baby on the stomach to sleep until he was able to roll over on his own.

My baby doesn't sleep when he's on his back, he may sleep on my arms but when I put him down he fusses, but now he's three months,the problem has reduced he can sleep on his bac esk, and I also help him do it by cuddling together on the bed
